SAFE AND SOUND

I had spent days walking through the desert. I was exhausted, but I had accomplished my duty. Escorting was never the most exciting assignment, but a job was a job. As hard as it could be, I knew I helped people; that in itself was reward enough for me.

I must admit I often thought of home when on duty. I remembered the smell of freshly cooked food in the house, the softness of a real bed, the warmth of my family. When things got rough, as they always did in war zones, that’s what kept me going.

My task was completed, I was allowed to go home for a few days. I was welcomed by Michael, 3 years old, with hugs and kisses. He is my favourite, though I’d never admit it if I was asked. Jake, my master, pat my head and said for both of us :

“We’re home, safe and sound.”
